Dispensary Manager NHS AfC: Band 7 Job opening for a Dispensary Manager at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient supply of medicines across the Trust. Daily responsibilities include overseeing staffing, rotas, workflow, maintaining high governance and safety standards, supporting staff development, and working with pharmacy and clinical teams to deliver a patient‑centred service.
Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, with occasional weekend duties and late shifts as required. Job overview We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to take on the role of Dispensary Manager. In this key role, you will ensure the safe, timely and efficient supply of medicines across the Trust, oversee staffing, rotas and workflow, maintain high standards of governance, safety and stock control, and support the ongoing development and performance of the dispensary team.
Working closely with pharmacy and clinical colleagues, you will help deliver a smooth, reliable, patient‑centred medicines supply service. Main duties of the job A confident and capable leader with strong organisational skills, clear communication and a proactive approach to day‑to‑day challenges. The role includes coordinating daily dispensary work to keep services running smoothly, organising staffing and managing workload priorities.
You will maintain accurate stock processes and meet required standards, help develop staff skills and support a positive team culture. You will also contribute to service improvements, including digital developments and work closely with pharmacy and clinical teams to deliver a reliable, patient‑focused medicines service. Person specification Qualifications (General education/further and professional) Approved or recognised course/qualification meeting the requirements for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Undergraduate degree or currently working towards one (Pharmaceutical / Health & Social Care field) or equivalent demonstrable experience. A management or leadership qualification, is currently studying for one, or can demonstrate equivalent experience.
Evidence of short HR‑related courses (e.g., Recruitment & Retention, Appraisals, Managing Attendance, Managing Performance). Evidence of continuous professional development. Experience Extensive experience within a hospital pharmacy environment.
Recent and relevant management or supervisory experience, ideally within hospital pharmacy. Knowledge of HR legislation and policies, with experience applying them in practice. Recruitment and selection experience.
Staff development and appraisal experience. Experience of managing change within a complex environment. Significant experience of working with automated dispensing systems.
Skills and Knowledge Highly developed organisational and analytical skills, clearly evidenced through previous managerial or supervisory experience. Proven leadership and motivational skills, clearly evidenced through previous supervisory or managerial experience. Highly effective communication skills, including active listening and strong written and verbal abilities, demonstrated when working with individuals and groups.
Proven performance management skills, demonstrated through effective staff development, objective setting and review. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build positive relationships at all levels. Proven ability to manage a complex and demanding workload, maintaining effectiveness under pressure and prioritising tasks appropriately.
Influencing and persuasion skills, ability to present ideas and proposals effectively. Working knowledge of electronic prescribing and pharmacy information systems. Good understanding of the national strategic context of the NHS and Trust and departmental strategic objectives.
