What Youll Be Doing (position summary):
The Taxation Group is responsible for providing tax advisory and planning services in support of transactions, products, and strategic business initiatives, as well as tax compliance services for the CIBC group of companies worldwide. The CIBC India Taxation team will play a critical role in supporting CIBC Indias operations, ensuring compliance with local tax regulations, mitigating risks, and providing strategic tax advisory services.

Job Purpose

The Director, Taxation (India) Corporate Tax will manage corporate tax compliance and provide corporate tax advisory support for CIBC Indias operations. This role is essential to address the complexities of Indian tax regulations, compliance demands, and to mitigate risks. The position will also support CIBC Indias strategic growth initiatives while ensuring adherence to local corporate tax laws and regulations.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Prepare and manage the corporate taxation compliance functions in India, in conjunction with the European and Asia Pacific Tax Team and external advisors, with the objective to manage the tax compliance function independently in the future.
  • Prepare Indian corporate tax computations and returns.
  • Prepare and manage Indian advance tax payment computations and returns.
  • Minimize errors in tax filings and reporting to avoid penalties and scrutiny from Indian tax authorities.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Indian tax authorities. Act as the point of contact in liaising and responding to tax audits by maintaining records and supporting documentation for interaction with Indian tax authorities.
  • Support the preparation and reporting of tax-related information for statutory accounts
  • Ensure timely preparation of documentation to facilitate settlement of Indian corporate tax liabilities within statutory deadlines.
  • Assist with the preparation of the month-end, quarter-end and year-end tax reporting processes, includingpreparing monthly tax provisions and related schedules
  • Assess the tax implications of differences between Indian Accounting Standards and IFRS and prepare corresponding tax computations and documentation to ensure compliance with IFRS reporting.
  • Operate robust internal tax controls and governance frameworks to mitigate tax risks.
  • Provide strategic tax advisory for business expansion and cross-border transactions in India.
  • Support the Group Taxation Transfer Pricing team with local compliance, documentation, and related transfer pricing matters for CIBC India.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for business stakeholders in India.
  • Support the development,implementation and maintenance of internal governance tax policies and procedures for CIBC India.
  • Ensure compliance with OECD/G20 BEPS 2.0 measures, including Pillar 2 requirements for India, as applicable.
  • Partner with the European, Asia Pacific and Toronto Tax Teams to align global tax strategies and ensure consistency in compliance efforts.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including Legal, Finance, and Operations, to address tax-related matters.
  • Define and revise roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities regarding taxation matters to reflect changes in business, regulatory, and legislative needs.
  • Provide training and guidance to non-tax specialists in India to enhance their understanding of tax regulations.

Cross-Functional Relationships:

  • Support CIBC India operations as required.
  • Partner and collaborate with Legal on litigation and tax authority audits as necessary.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Indian CA with 7(MG1) or more years of industry tax experience or legally qualified with prior experience in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Sound technical taxation and corporate planning knowledge and commercial sense.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of Indian tax laws and regulations.
  • Proven track record in managing cross-border compliance for multinational organizations.
  • Knowledge of industry and market practices, products, and services sufficient to analyze complex issues and developments and apply such knowledge to CIBC Indias practices.
  • Collegiate participation in forums aimed at anticipatory and pre-emptive action to minimize risk of unnecessary governmental, legal, or regulatory scrutiny.
  • Results-oriented, self-motivated, proactive, and proven ability to work independently.
  • Focused, thorough, and disciplined in approach.
  • Decisive, confident, and comfortable collaborating with business partners.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to translate technical guidance into business terms and implications.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills leading to practical solutions on a broad range of matters.

Working Conditions:

  • This role operates under a hybrid model, within a normal office environment with little exposure to adverse working conditions and working from home(LH2)(MG3).
  • The role is based in India to align with Indian time zones and regional business operations.
