Position Summary The Director of Nursing (DON) oversees the leadership, coordination, and management of the nursing department within a healthcare facility. This role ensures delivery of patient care that meets the highest standards while complying with all federal, state, and organizational regulations. The DON works closely with the executive leadership team to achieve clinical and operational objectives.
Under Georgia regulations, the Director of Nursing must be a Registered Nurse (RN) who is responsible for the administration and quality of nursing services. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Clinical Oversight Lead and direct nursing staff, including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and clinical supervisors. Develop and implement nursing policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
Ensure high-quality patient care aligned with facility standards and regulatory requirements. Coordinate care across departments and monitor nursing operations. Staff Management Recruit, hire, train, and supervise nursing personnel.
Conduct performance evaluations and manage staff development. Maintain adequate staffing levels to meet patient care needs. Mentor and support professional growth of the nursing team.
Compliance & Quality Assurance Ensure compliance with Georgia Department of Community Health and federal regulations. Monitor clinical documentation, patient care plans, and quality indicators. Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Maintain compliance with state licensing and accreditation standards. Operational Responsibilities Collaborate with leadership on staffing strategies and workforce planning. Manage departmental budgets and allocate resources effectively.
Oversee medication management and clinical service programs. Support infection control and patient safety protocols. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Masterβs degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred. Licensure Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Georgia, in good standing. Experience 3β5 years of nursing leadership or management experience.
Background in long-term care, hospital, or healthcare facility management preferred. Demonstrated ability to supervise nursing teams and oversee clinical operations. Georgia Regulatory Requirements Must be a licensed RN employed full-time as the Director of Nursing.
The DON must devote full time to nursing administration and cannot simultaneously serve as the facility administrator. Required Skills Strong clinical leadership and decision-making abilities. Knowledge of Georgia healthcare regulations and compliance standards.
Experience managing multidisciplinary clinical teams. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage complex healthcare operations and staffing needs.
Additional Requirements Successful completion of background screening and credential verification. Current CPR/BLS certification. Flexibility to work extended or varied hours as operational needs require.
