Historic Environment Planning Adviser (South West) Overview Our client is seeking a Historic Environment Planning Adviser to join its regional Development Advice team in the South West . This is a full-time permanent role based in Bristol with hybrid working . This position plays an important role in shaping strategic planning and development outcomes affecting historic places.

The successful candidate will provide specialist advice on development plans, spatial strategies, and major infrastructure proposals, helping to ensure that growth and change are delivered in a way that protects and enhances the historic environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a planning professional with expertise in the historic environment, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement, who is looking to contribute to place-led growth and sustainable development. Responsibilities Provide formal advice on the preparation and revision of development plans and strategic planning documents , with a particular focus on site allocations .

Ensure planning frameworks support the conservation and sustainable management of the historic environment . Lead or coordinate responses to planning-related strategies and documents, including: design transport minerals and waste flood risk and coastal change financial contributions, including planning obligations Respond to Strategic Environmental Assessments and Sustainability Appraisals , and contribute specialist input on Environmental Impact Assessments . Build constructive relationships with local planning authorities, public bodies, and other partners involved in the plan-making process.

Act as an expert witness at Local Plan examinations and other relevant hearings where required. Contribute to the review, development, and dissemination of guidance relating to planning and the historic environment. Support responses to emerging government policy, consultations, and sector practice developments.

Advocate effectively for the value of the historic environment in planning and development decisions. Requirements Degree-level qualification in town planning or a closely related subject, or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field. Strong understanding of the national planning system , including its legislative and policy context at both strategic and local levels.

Knowledge of how planning supports the sustainable management of the historic environment . Proven experience in supporting or managing positive change to places . Strong negotiation and influencing skills .

Experience of working constructively with local authorities, developers, landowners, and other stakeholders . Ability to provide clear, well-reasoned professional advice within agreed timescales. Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
