Design Manager – Wastewater Treatment Projects As Design Manager, you will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team to bring water and wastewater infrastructure projects from project brief stage to the detailed design stage and into construction. You will lead a team of engineers and appointed consultants, ensuring projects progress from concept to implementation while maintaining a one‑team culture and a strong focus on client engagement and sustainability. You will support the Framework Manager in moving projects from design into construction, coordinate design review workshops and HAZOPs, and ensure all actions are closed on time.

Your role involves working closely with clients, client representatives, and third‑party agencies, as well as coordinating PSDP activities and maintaining risk assessments. Main Duties and Responsibilities Work as part of a team in the delivery of one or more projects at any one time, embracing a one‑team culture. Ensure Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability standards, policies and procedures are integrated into designs.

Collaborate with all key stakeholders, including clients and third‑party agencies. Lead the design team and any appointed consultants in all aspects of the design scope. Develop a design budget and monitor expenditure against it.

Represent the company at design review workshops, HAZOPs, and other stakeholder meetings. Coordinate PSDP for the design phase, ensuring best‑practice prevention principles are adopted. Develop and monitor a design programme at each project’s start, adjusting to meet desired outcomes.

Monitor project performance, manage risks and opportunities, and report monthly performance to the framework manager. Prepare costed proposals for final design or at required intervals. Provide a review of final design and contract documentation, offering feedback on red‑line documents.

Train and mentor staff, developing team members’ professional growth. Manage resources and recruitment within the team as a hiring manager. Address client and stakeholder complaints promptly and conduct satisfaction surveys to improve service.

Share lessons learned and innovative solutions to improve design delivery processes. Keep up‑to‑date with the latest standards and technologies through continuous professional development. Other duties as required from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry. Extensive knowledge of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 and a certificate in Designing Safely for Construction or PSDP coordination (preferred). Experience in civil and process engineering works such as temporary works, bulk earthworks, tank systems, building works, process units and M&E installations.

Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering. Ability to work under pressure to deliver project objectives. Ability to work collaboratively with clients and their representatives in leading and developing design solutions.

Good knowledge of programme management software such as Microsoft Project, with experience preparing baseline programmes and updates. Initiative, problem‑solving skills, and adaptability during project delivery. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
