Design Engineer
Riddwood Consulting Engineers
Job Description
Riddwood is a specialist Construction Engineering consultancy dedicated to designing temporary works solutions across Australia. In a world of generalists, we are proud to be specialists - trusted by contractors of all sizes to design the temporary works that make construction possible.
From bridges and tunnels to complex civil and building structures, our engineers combine strong technical expertise with practical construction knowledge to deliver safe, buildable and efficient solutions that keep projects moving.
We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our Engineering team and contribute to some of Australia's major infrastructure projects.
In this role, you will work on complex projects involving tunnels, bridges and large-scale civil structures. You will develop and deliver engineering solutions that bring together structural design and construction methodology, with involvement across the full project lifecycle—from concept design and detailed analysis through to construction support and site inspections.
You will work closely with experienced engineers, drafters, contractors and clients to solve practical construction challenges. As a Design Engineer, you will be expected to manage your own design tasks, communicate directly with clients and take increasing ownership of project delivery.
This is an opportunity to strengthen your technical, commercial and client-management skills while seeing your designs implemented on site.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform structural calculations and analysis in accordance with Riddwood’s design guidelines, Australian Standards and quality assurance processes.
Design and review temporary works structures in steel, concrete and timber across major infrastructure, civil and building projects.
Prepare clear and accurate calculations, design reports, drawings, risk registers and supporting technical documentation.
Manage design tasks independently, including planning your work, monitoring budgets and meeting project deadlines.
Coordinate with engineers and drafters to ensure the design intent is accurately reflected in the final documentation.
Liaise directly with clients, contractors and project stakeholders throughout the design process.
Respond to design review comments and support designs through approval and construction.
Undertake site inspections independently and provide engineering advice during construction.
Support junior engineers by providing technical guidance, reviewing work and sharing practical knowledge.
Contribute to continuous improvement, lessons learned and the development of Riddwood’s technical standards and systems.
ABOUT YOU
You are someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of your work and is motivated by solving practical engineering problems.
You will hold a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil or Structural Engineering that is recognised by Engineers Australia, have full working rights in Australia and at least two years of structural design experience within an engineering consultancy.
You will also have:
A good understanding of relevant Australian Standards, including AS 1170, AS 1720, AS 3600, AS 3610, AS 4100 and AS 5100.
Experience designing structures in steel, concrete and timber.
The ability to manage your own design tasks and work effectively within a collaborative team.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good commercial awareness, including an understanding of project budgets, deadlines and client expectations.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Experience using structural analysis and design software such as SpaceGass, Structural Toolkit, Tekla Tedds, Autodesk Robot or similar software will be highly regarded.
Experience in temporary works, construction engineering or major infrastructure projects will be advantageous, but is not essential.
OUR OFFER
A competitive salary package and the tools and technology you need to perform your role effectively.
Ongoing technical development, regular feedback and mentoring from experienced engineers.
Hands-on involvement in major infrastructure and construction projects across Australia.
The opportunity to take ownership of your own design tasks and work directly with clients and construction teams.
The opportunity to see your designs implemented on site.
A supportive and collaborative team of like-minded professionals.
A clear pathway to increase your technical, commercial and project-management responsibilities as your career develops.
