Job Description

About the Company

Self-Employed Delivery Driver (Van) โ€” Birmingham

Location: Birmingham and surrounding areas

Contract: Self-employed / subcontractor

Hours: Approx. 40โ€“50 hours per week, with flexibility on scheduling

About the Role

We're looking for reliable self-employed van drivers to deliver parcels across Birmingham and the surrounding region. You'll collect your route from the depot each morning, plan your run, and deliver to residential and business addresses to agreed service standards. Routes are typically within a defined radius, so you'll get to know your patch well.

This suits someone who wants control over how they work, prefers being out on the road to being desk-bound, and takes pride in getting the job done properly rather than just getting it done.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload parcels safely and accurately at the start and end of each shift
  • Plan and follow efficient delivery routes, adapting to traffic, road closures and access issues
  • Deliver parcels to residential and commercial addresses within agreed time windows
  • Capture proof of delivery, signatures and photos using a handheld scanner or mobile app
  • Handle failed deliveries, redelivery attempts and returns according to process
  • Manage collections and returns where required
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks and report defects promptly
  • Keep the vehicle clean, roadworthy and legally compliant
  • Maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage and fuel
  • Represent the brand professionally at every doorstep

Qualifications

  • Full UK driving licence held for a minimum of (12) months, with no more than (6) points
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Registered as self-employed with HMRC (or willing to register), with a UTR number
  • Own van, or willingness to hire one through our approved supplier
  • Valid business/hire-and-reward insurance and goods-in-transit cover
  • Smartphone with data
  • Basic DBS check (we can arrange this)

Required Skills

  • Driving and route management
  • Confident, safe driver with a clean approach to road use and defensive driving habits
  • Good spatial awareness for manoeuvring a van in tight residential streets, city-centre loading bays and multi-storey car parks
  • Strong navigational skills and sound judgement on route sequencing โ€” able to work with a planned route but adjust sensibly when conditions change
  • Familiarity with Birmingham's road network, or the ability to learn it quickly
  • Organisation and time management
  • Able to structure a full day's workload independently and keep to time without supervision
  • Prioritises effectively when volumes are high or routes run behind
  • Punctual and consistent โ€” starts on time, finishes the round
  • Comfortable working to KPIs around delivery success rate, drops per hour and on-time performance
  • Customer service
  • Polite, presentable and professional at the door
  • Clear communicator with customers, neighbours and business receptions
  • Handles complaints, missed deliveries and frustrated customers calmly and without escalation
  • Understands that the driver is often the only human contact a customer has with the brand
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Scans, labels and records deliveries correctly first time
  • Careful with addresses, flat numbers and delivery instructions
  • Accurate with paperwork, PODs and returns processing
  • Problem solving and resilience
  • Uses initiative when access is blocked, an address is wrong or a customer is unavailable
  • Stays productive in poor weather, heavy traffic and peak-season volumes
  • Physically fit and able to handle repetitive lifting, carrying and getting in and out of the vehicle throughout the day
  • Technology
  • Comfortable using handheld scanners, delivery apps and smartphone navigation
  • Able to troubleshoot basic device issues without needing constant support
  • Compliance and integrity
  • Understands and follows manual handling, health and safety, and road traffic regulations
  • Trustworthy with valuable and confidential parcels
  • Aware of GDPR basics around customer addresses and data
  • Honest reporting of incidents, damages and delays
  • Working style
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working alone for most of the day
  • Reliable and low-maintenance โ€” needs minimal chasing
  • Works constructively with depot staff, loaders and other drivers

Preferred Skills

  • Previous multi-drop, courier or last-mile delivery experience
  • Knowledge of Birmingham postcodes and local geography
  • Experience with delivery scanning apps or route optimisation software

Pay Range and Compensation Package

Competitive rates paid (weekly/fortnightly)

Flexibility over scheduling and days worked

Consistent volume year-round, with additional earning potential during peak

Support with vehicle hire, insurance and onboarding

Local routes โ€” home most evenings

Equal Opportunity Statement

We are committed to diversity and inclusivity.
