About Farm Girl
Farm Girl makes better-for-you cereal that people actually love - and we're growing fast, expanding across Canada and into the US. Behind the brand is a real manufacturing operation: mixing, production, and packaging lines running daily, and a small, senior finance team that punches well above its weight. We're building the finance function ahead of our growth, and this role is a cornerstone of that build-out.
About the role
Cost accounting is not optional in a food manufacturer - it's where the accounting gets interesting. You'll own product costing and inventory accounting end-to-end: setting standards, explaining variances, and turning plant-floor data into numbers leadership can act on. You'll work closely with our production, mixing, and maintenance teams, and you'll be central to a new daily production tracking system we're rolling out right now.
You'll report to the Controller and work directly with the CFO - rare, hands-on mentorship and real visibility for someone who wants to grow with a scaling company.
What you'll do
- Own standard costing: build and maintain standard costs for materials, labour, and overhead across our SKUs, and re-baseline as recipes, volumes, and input prices change
- Analyze and explain variances monthly - purchase price, material usage/yield, labour, and overhead absorption - so cost problems surface early instead of hiding
- Own inventory accounting: valuation of raw materials, WIP, and finished goods (FIFO), overhead absorption, and book-to-physical reconciliations
- Run and improve our daily production tracking: capture output, materials usage, waste, and downtime from the floor, and build the Excel models that turn that data into cost-per-unit reporting
- Partner with production, mixing, and maintenance teams - coordinate cycle counts and stock counts, improve data collection at the source, and help the floor understand why the numbers matter
- Track yield and waste, flag recurring issues (scrap, part failures, overuse), and quantify the margin impact
- Maintain and cost BOMs/recipes, and support pricing and margin analysis by SKU and customer
- Support month-end close: inventory and COGS entries, cost-related reconciliations, and variance commentary
- Support our annual external review and help strengthen inventory controls as we scale
What we're looking for
- 3?5 years of accounting experience, with at least 1?2 years in cost or inventory accounting in a manufacturing environment (food/CPG a strong asset)
- Solid understanding of standard costing, BOMs, inventory valuation, and variance analysis
- Strong Excel skills - you can build a clean, traceable model from scratch (no hard-coded mystery numbers)
- Comfortable on a production floor: you'd rather walk the line and count the pallets than guess from a desk
- Detail-oriented and organized - you treat an unexplained variance as unfinished work
- Clear communicator who can work with non-finance teams and explain what the data is for
- CPA designation or active enrolment in the CPA program is an asset
- Experience with Xero or similar accounting systems, and with inventory/ERP tools, is an asset
Why join us
- High-growth company with a clear plan - and a finance team being built deliberately, not reactively
- Direct mentorship from the Controller and CFO; your work goes straight to leadership and the board
- Real ownership from day one: this is a new seat, and you'll shape how cost accounting works here
- Room to grow as we expand across Canada and the US
