Responsibilities You will be joining us as a Registered Mental Health Nurse, acting as the clinical lead for a specialist mental health transport team, ensuring the safe, lawful, and therapeutic transfer of individuals experiencing mental health needs. You will deliver highâquality, traumaâinformed, and personâcentred care, completing mental health and risk assessments and responding to changes in patientsâ presentation. You will make autonomous clinical decisions in line with NMC standards and mental health legislation, with a strong focus on least restrictive practice and dignity.
Working collaboratively with ambulance clinicians, referrers, and receiving services, you will ensure effective communication, accurate documentation, and highâquality clinical handovers throughout the transport process. Summary of Main Duties Include Provide safe, compassionate care to patients with mental health needs during transfers, admissions, discharges, and specialist transport. Complete mental health assessments before and during transport, identifying risks such as selfâharm, suicide, aggression, absconding, or deterioration.
Use a calm, personâcentred and traumaâinformed approach, including deâescalation and reassurance, to reduce distress and promote emotional safety. Lead mental health care during transport, making clinical decisions in line with NMC standards and company policies. Develop and adapt risk and care plans throughout the journey in response to changes in the patientâs condition.
Safely manage patients detained under the Mental Health Act, ensuring legal compliance and respect for dignity and rights. Work collaboratively with ambulance staff, control teams, referrers, receiving services, families, and other professionals. Administer and monitor medication safely in line with prescriptions, PGDs, and company procedures.
Use least restrictive practices at all times, ensuring any restraint or increased observation is lawful, ethical, and necessary. Monitor physical health and respond appropriately to emergencies or deterioration. Maintain accurate clinical records and provide clear handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Fulfil safeguarding duties for adults and children, reporting concerns appropriately. Contribute to service improvement, clinical governance, and reflective practice. Maintain upâtoâdate knowledge of mental health legislation and best practice.
Act professionally at all times, showing empathy, respect, and professionalism. Qualifications Requirements of the role Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with current and unrestricted registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Recognised nursing qualification (Diploma or Degree in Mental Health Nursing).
Demonstrable postâregistration experience working with patients experiencing acute and complex mental health needs, including crisis intervention and risk management. Proven experience in delivering therapeutic, traumaâinformed, and patientâcentred care, with strong skills in deâescalation and communication. Sound knowledge and practical experience of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and associated legislation relevant to patient transport.
Experience working autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team in dynamic or challenging environments. Ability to undertake and document comprehensive mental health risk assessments and care plans. Competence in medication management and administration in line with prescriptions, PGDs, and clinical protocols.
Strong understanding of safeguarding principles for adults and children. Good level of physical fitness and ability to meet the demands of patient transport, including extended journeys. Full UK manual driving licence, with a maximum of 6 points.
Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
