Position Overview
Our client, a mid-sized privately owned actuarial and benefits consulting firm, is seeking an Accounting Manager to join
their Edmonton office. The firm provides actuarial, administration, software and consulting solutions for pension, benefit
and investment programs to corporations, unions, associations and governments across Canada. This opportunity is a

Responsibilities
- Lead a team of 9 across both offices, made up of trust fund accountants together with accounts payable and accounts receivable staff.
- Review the team's work and provide the day to day training, mentorship and technical guidance that a very junior group requires.
- Hold hiring, firing and disciplinary authority over the team, exercised in consultation with the partner group.
- Own delivery of all reporting deadlines, including audit working papers, timely processing and the monthly profit and loss statement.
- Review and approve monthly financial statements and working papers before they are issued to clients or auditors.
- Own taxation matters for the trust funds, including the working relationship with CRA and the provincial Ministry of Finance.
- Standardize accounting processes across the trust funds and ensure the accountants understand and apply them consistently.
- Review existing processes for efficiency and propose improvements, internally or to clients where a client policy is creating the bottleneck.
- Support the internal account managers in developing and maintaining client budgets.
- Oversee general ledgers, financial statements, banking, and accounts payable and receivable functions across all trust fund clients.
- Oversee preparation and review of working papers, account and bank reconciliations, journal entries and financial analyses.
- Act as the primary liaison with banks, vendors and external auditors, and coordinate audit fieldwork so reporting deadlines are met.
- Oversee preparation of tax returns, GST filings and other regulatory filings, ensuring instalments and balances are paid on time.
- Develop, implement and monitor financial controls and internal control frameworks across the trust fund portfolio.
- Establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets and reporting standards on a biweekly, monthly and annual basis.
- Review and maintain monthly and quarterly client invoicing.
- Oversee investment accounting working papers and market value adjustments, working with the investment team on valuation of complex and private holdings.
- Maintain current knowledge of trust fund accounting standards and audit best practice.
Must Have Qualifications
- 5+ years of accounting leadership experience
- Previous experience with trust funds, benefits administration, or public accounting
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage large teams and complex projects
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with attention to detail
- Experience using technology to improve existing processes and service delivery
