Job Description
EPCOR is seeking a full‑time, permanent Engineer, Grid Operations in Edmonton, Alberta. This role focuses on advanced grid technologies, real‑time system support, and power system analysis to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electric grid. Highlights of the job Full‑time, permanent position Based out of Edmonton, AB Key focus on ADMS, EMS, DERMS, and grid modernization initiatives Responsibilities Manage and maintain grid operations platforms (ADMS, EMS, DERMS) to support real‑time system operations Provide real‑time engineering support to System Control Operators during normal and contingency conditions Perform power system studies (load flow, contingency analysis, fault studies) to assess operational impacts Analyze, validate, and enhance system models, configurations, and telemetry data Support the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), automation, and emerging grid technologies Represent Grid Operations Engineering in cross‑functional initiatives and with external stakeholders Collaborate with planning, asset management, operations, IT, and external stakeholders (e.g., AESO, AltaLink) Develop and implement standards, processes, and procedures to ensure safe and reliable grid operations Contribute to grid modernization initiatives, including advanced system functionality and automation Support project delivery through technical analysis, testing, and validation of systems and tools Provide operational engineering input for switching requests as well as planned and unplanned outages Identify operational risks and lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and performance Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and Engineers‑in‑Training (EITs) Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power systems specialization preferred) Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA (or eligibility to register) Minimum 5+ years of experience in utility operations, distribution design and planning, system modeling, or distribution automation Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution system operations and engineering principles Experience with ADMS, EMS, DERMS, or similar grid management systems Understanding of distributed energy resources (DERs), including generation, EVs, and energy storage Expertise in power systems and System Control operations, including advanced applications such as state estimation and contingency analysis tools Proficiency in power system analysis tools (e.g., CYME, PSS/E) for load flow, short‑circuit, and contingency analysis Familiarity with SCADA systems, telemetry, and grid automation technologies Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams and stakeholders Eligibility: at least 18 years of age, high school diploma (GED or equivalent), and legal entitlement to work in Canada Clearance on applicable background checks and professional reference checks; some positions may require enhanced criminal background assessment Potential technical/practical assessment during selection process Physical requirements: good condition, willing to work in all weather conditions; may require pre‑placement medical and drug/alcohol testing We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from diverse backgrounds.
